A dental crown is a covering for the tooth, which is generally made from materials like porcelain, metal or ceramic. A dental bridge uses two crowns to fill a gap between one or multiple missing teeth.
The bridge's center is a false tooth called a pontic which fills the gap.
Needing a little extra protection for your teeth is by no means a bad thing. When you receive a dental crown, your tooth will be protected from further damage and strengthen and repair the appearance of your entire smile.
At least two appointments are needed for a dental crown or bridge. Your dentist will begin by evaluating your mouth and taking some X-rays. This helps them create an accurate picture of your oral health and the extent of care you require to get things back to normal.
Next, they'll take impressions or scanning of your mouth; these are sent to the dental lab to make your permanent crown. A temporary crown will be placed over the top of the tooth in the meantime.
Once your permanent crown/bridge is ready, you'll return to receive it. Your dentist will make sure that it fits you precisely and that your bite is normal before letting you leave.
